Description: South La Brea Gallery is pleased to present a solo sculptural installation by Southern California artist Rochelle Botello. A recent graduate of the Master of Fine Arts program at the Claremont Graduate School, Ms Botello's lyrical objects embody the messiness of memories through multi-layered complexity of line, shape, texture and pattern.

The work for this exhibition, created over the last year, has been delicately manipulated and pieced together from fragments of material that begin and end abruptly in unexpected ways. Ms Botello states that her "everyday observations" inspire her sculptures, but the work is not a literal representation of personal experiences. They are a "messiness of memory", a multi-layered complexity of recollections and odd juxtapositions that are meant to disrupt or challenge psychological moods ordinarily associated with adolescents. The sculptures are not explicitly figurative or abstract, but look as if they are failed makeshift objects somehow on the verge of falling apart. Although they are pieced together, the sculptures are not constructed haphazardly or without care. The artist revels in the use of materials and the act of production that went into their construction making the works layered and complex, as well as, perverse, playful, dark, odd, humorous, and beautiful.

South La Brea Gallery is also pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by Southern California artist Martin Kirchner.

Mr. Kirchner's art can be thought of as parallel to the concept of sampling within the music industry. Similar to appropriation, the purpose of sampling places the emphasis is on the eclectic inclusion of influences instead of a more critical critique that is associated with appropriation. The work included on exhibition at South La Brea Gallery is interdisciplinary and strives to combine and unite various art traditions into one. The works rely on images and gestures quoted from various sources and materials, Haitian voodoo altars, Buddhist iconography, parade decoration, heavy metal music, and modernist art.

South La Brea Gallery is located in the city of Inglewood, California - just east of the Los Angeles International Airport at the corner of La Brea and Manchester.

An opening reception for the artists will take place Friday, July 23rd from 7 to 10pm. The show runs through Saturday, August 14th.

Gallery hours are Saturday 11am - 5pm and by appointment. For further information please contact South La Brea Gallery at (310) 486-0266 or by e-mail at southlabrea@yahoo.com
