Description: Heterotopias: Themed Environments in Shanghai and Los Angeles is the fourth event of the MAK UFI Public Forum series. Heterotopias will feature Xiangning Li, MAK UFI fellow and urban theorist whose research focuses on the transplantation, application, adaptation and distortion of Western models in China. His presentation will include an overview of Shanghai's "One City Nine Towns" development plan, in which nine suburbs have been designed as large-scale replicas of traditional European towns, reflecting the preference for Western culture, architecture and urbanism in contemporary China. Examples include the "Italian town" of Pujiang, designed by an Italian firm and featuring a palazzo and Venice-like canals.

Li's research is aimed at evaluating the consequences of such "themed" urban environments. During his UFI residency in Los Angeles, he has found an abundance of examples for comparative analysis, from Disneyland's Main Street USA to the canals of Venice, California. Examining both the positive and negative aspects of these themed environments, Li has identified lessons for Shanghai as it grows and expands.
About: MAK Center for Art And Architecture
In the spirit of Rudolf M. Schindler, the experimental architect and social utopian, the MAK Center seeks out and supports projects and ideas which break the disciplinary boundaries between the fields of art and architecture. Established in 1994 through an agreement between the MAK - Austrian Museum of Applied Arts - Vienna, supported by the Republic of Austria, and the Friends of the Schindler House, the MAK Center examines what is shared and what is distinct in the practices of artists and architects who work with spatial concepts. Through its programs, the MAK Center acts as a "think tank" for current issues in art and architecture, encouraging explorations of practical and theoretical aspects and engaging the center's places, spaces, and histories. The MAK Center offers a year-round schedule of exhibitions, symposia, lectures, performances, workshops, and publications and hosts a residency program for visiting artists and architects. It joins the Friends of the Schindler House in their mission to preserve, promote, and make publicly accessible the Schindler House.

Most MAK Center programs are presented in the Schindler House. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, it was the center of Los Angeles' avant-garde intellectual community. Now, with MAK Center programming, it is once again a focal point for L.A.'s artistic community.
