| Description: | The theme for the 38th Annual Concern Foundation Block Party is “OH WHAT A NIGHT! Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Birth of Rock & Roll”, honoring Lance Freed and the legacy of his father, DJ Alan Freed who coined the phrase Rock & Roll with his Moondog Coronation Ball in 1957.
The anticipated sold-out evening, hosting over 3,500 guests, will feature four stages of live musical entertainment featuring the Tom Nolan Band, The Wonderelles and DJ Dwayne Brown. The Hula Hoop troupe “Hoop it Up! will be performing as well as giving Hula Hoop lessons. Other “streetmosphere” activities include spa services provided by Le Spa at the Sofitel and digital photos by Brian Kramer Photography. As usual there will be traditional casino style gaming, an opportunity drawing and over 150 great silent auction packages. The live auction features trips and vacation packages with air fare provided by American Airlines and several one-of-a-kind items and opportunities.
It would not be a Concern Block Party without the over 50 restaurants and caterers that provide “a taste” of their specialties. Some of t he restaurants participating this year include The Grill on the Alley, Lawry’s Catering, Akasha, Bar Hayama, Chaya Restaurant Group, The Capitol Grille, Herb Alpert’s Vibrato Grill & Jazz, California Sushi Academy, Malo/Mas Malo, Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza & Grill, Fogo de Chao, Factor’s Famous Deli, Pink’s Famous Hot Dogs, Larsen’s Steakhouse, Larchmont Grill, Maria’s Italian Kitchen,Tanino Restaurant and Via Alloro, Tavern, La Provence Patisserie, Drunken Udder Ice Cream, Dandy Don’s Homemade Ice Cream and DeLuscious Cookies & Milk. Beverages include Ventura Limoncello Co., Reed’s Ginger Brew Products, Asahi Beer USA, Inc. Coca-Cola Products, Martian Ranch Wineries, Stockholm Krystal Vodka Martini Bar and coffee drinks from Wolfgang Puck Cold Brewed Bottled Iced Coffee, Pasquini Espresso Company and Weaver’s Coffee & Teas. |

It was 1968 and a small group of friends in Los Angeles had just received the news from their good friend Beverly Wolman that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
At 35 years of age, Beverly was the first in her group of friends to be diagnosed with a terminal illness. A close-knit network of friends whose origins dated back to their high school years had maintained intimate ties over the years and shared in many of each other's milestone occasions.
Beverly's friends were stunned by the devastating news. Rather than give over to grief, fifteen sets of couples and dear friends decided to channel their grief and frustration to give purpose to their friend's life and to take a stand against cancer. In the process, they not only changed the world, but also advanced the study and understanding of cancer by leaps and bounds.
From that fateful meeting in Beverly's living room the notion of creating an organization to "CONquer canCER Now" was conceived. Shortly thereafter, Concern Foundation was established. |
